Planning Board and Zoning Evaluation - Mission
Review and evaluate planning, zoning and land use regulations, enforcement and proposed
changes thereto. Identify situations and/or proposed changes that could cause measurable
impairment to the health, safety or quality of life or a negative impact on property values of
member communities and residents and residents of the county at large.
Monitor developments in planning and land use regulations by the county's Planning
Department, Planning Board, Board of Adjustment and Board of Commissioners to maintain
awareness of the issues being brought before those bodies and assess their impact on member
communities and residents.
Communicate relevant issues to the ABCPOA Board, member communities and other
committees so that appropriate action can be decided and taken.
Specific Actions:
Maintain contact with the Director of Planning.
Review agenda of Planning Board and Board of Adjustment meetings and alert the ABCPOA
Board and/or other committee chairs of any items that could impact their areas of interest.
Attend Planning Board and Board of Adjustment meetings to monitor their actions and
assess their views and positions on issues of interest to the Alliance.
Communicate to the ABCPOA Board as needed regarding government board actions,
observations, items of interest or concern and recommendations.
Prepare and/or present public position papers on key issues of interest concerning land use
planning and development to appropriate government bodies.
Summarize the committee's activities, issues and recommendations to the ABCPOA Board
quarterly.
County Commissioners/Budget and Taxes - An ABCPOA Commissioners/Budget and Taxes subcommittee will monitor and evaluate the Brunswick County budget, budget process and fiscal policy and actions. The subcommittee may propose Position Statements after concluding assessments and analysis of each annual budget and other fiscal matters.
Public Safety - Dynamic growth in Brunswick County underscores the need for careful attention to public safety issues. ABCPOA committees involved in public safety activities include Public Safety, Environmental Issues and Transportation. These committees will monitor and evaluate conditions, county actions and state proposals and may provide Position Statements regarding adequacy and efficacy of fire, police, EMS, traffic, roadways, public transportation, water quality and other related issues.
Transportation - The Transportation Committee must evaluate proposed NCDOT proposals to feed interstate traffic onto Route 17 and recommend appropriate ABCPOA action. The committee will also study the need for more public transportation and with the Planning Committee will provide a proposed course of action regarding the need for another Brunswick County airport.

Environmental Issues - The Environmental Issues Committee will monitor and evaluate matters, conditions and actions which do or may impact soil, air, underground and surface water quality, including but not limited to landfills, waste disposal and storm water run-off. As in other committees, its Position Statements may suggest coordination initiatives within the ABCPOA, training, public information or other educational actions and coordinating efforts with appropriate officials or entities.
