President's Update - July 15, 2010

Our organization continues to be actively involved on a number of issues that impact our lives in Brunswick County; our efforts have been focused on the following areas:

Candidates Night:

We are sponsoring a meet the candidates night on October 11, 2010 at the Odell Williamson Auditorium, Brunswick Community College. We are co-sponsoring this event with several newspapers and Chambers of Commerce. We have invited candidates for both local, state and national office and expect a good turnout both in terms of attendees as well as candidates.

Transportation Infrastructure:

Transportation will continue as probably the most critical issue we will face on a daily basis. Even with the current economy we all see problems with our infrastructure and we are sure that as soon as the economy improves it will only deteriorate further. While it is good to see that there is some progress being made it really isn't enough to meet our ever expanding needs.

Economic Development:

Another critical issue we are facing if we hope to improve the lives of all our residents will be economic development in Brunswick County. We are working with the County Economic Development office to try and recruit a number of our POA residents who have experience in small businesses to act as mentors to firms just starting out or perhaps expanding. A strong workforce is of benefit to us all.

Our Environment:

We continue to monitor this area as it is one that requires constant vigilance. Our committee has been working with and monitoring efforts to improve the water quality in the County both in the tidal estuaries as well as encouraging low impact development in new projects.

Property Insurance:

With the most recent rate increases approved for the coastal counties we are making our concerns known to our legislators and the public at large. We are cooperating with The Business Alliance for a Sound Economy and will support their efforts to make sure that insurance rates reflect actual experience and are based on sound financial projections. We are also supporting efforts of the Cape Fear Coalition of Concerned Citizens that are monitoring legislation to revise the "Beach Plan," and expect that there will be a great deal of activity in this initiative.

The ABCPOA understands the need to grow. We know there are many Property Owners Associations and Home Owners Associations in Brunswick County that would benefit from membership in our organization, and we also believe that the benefits would be mutual. If you have any comments or would like one of our officers to visit you organization and talk about the ABCPOA in greater detail please contact me, thanks.
